The Autism Society Philippines (ASP) is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being of persons on the autism spectrum disorder. We envision a society where Filipinos on the spectrum become the best of their potentials -- self-reliant, independent, productive, socially-accepted citizens of an Autism-OK Philippines.

To walk among angels

The Autism Society Philippines (ASP) has indeed made this year’s Angels Walk for Autism an event that will be long remembered for its relevance and scale.

Held last January 19 at the MOA Arena in Pasay City, the event attracted 10,000 participants from all over the Philippines. The large crowd filled the arena to the rafters − making Angels Walk for Autism 2014 the biggest autism advocacy event in the Philippines to date!

The event was a fitting start to ASP’s 25th year of advocating for the welfare and well-being of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. The ASP national leadership, headed by chair emeritus Erlinda “Dang” Koe and president Mary Janette PeƱa, unveiled its seven-point legislative and policy agenda for the first time.

The agenda, crafted from years of consultation and dialogue with stakeholders, includes mandatory developmental screening, comprehensive needs assessment, inclusive education, public servants with special skills, community-based rehabilitation programs, comprehensive sensitivity training for schools and workplaces, and creative mechanisms for funding. The society’s nationwide network of chapters will labor to bring these seven aspirations to reality.

Leaders of the government, the private sector and the autism community rallied behind the realization of the rights of individuals with autism, in observance of the 18th National Autism Consciousness Week (NACW). Senator Koko Pimentel, Department of Health Secretary Dr. Enrique Ona, Governor Jonvic Remulla, COMELEC Commissioners Grace Padaca and Rene Sarmiento, Human Rights Commissioner Coco Quisumbing, Pasay City Mayor Antonino Calixto, NCDA acting-executive director Carmen Zubiaga and the rest of the NACW working committee were visibly moved by the strength of the organization − both in their numbers and in their vision.

The “1Pangako” initiative, an on-line campaign to stop the use of “autistic” as a joke or insult, resonated with the leaders, especially with Comm. Padaca.

SM Prime president Hans Sy, SM Supermalls president Annie Garcia, Miescor president Angelito Bermudo, SM vice president for Operations Engineer Bien Mateo and Canon vice president for Consumer Systems Bong Serevo − all long-time ASP supporters − were amazed at how Angels Walk for Autism has grown in the last seven years. The heartfelt and generous support from these “archangels” from the business sector fuels the organization’s hope that inclusion of individuals with autism in more corporate workplaces will soon follow.

Representatives of professions who have become partners in the comprehensive assessment and management of Autism Spectrum disorders also witnessed the important advocacy milestone. They were Dr. Alexis Reyes for developmental pediatricians, Prof. Abelardo David for occupational therapists and Mae Sadicon for speech pathologists.

With 70 chapters nationwide, ASP members amassed in record numbers, with the province of Cavite fielding the largest contingent of approximately 1,400 participants. From as far north as the City of San Fernando, Pampanga to the recovering Tacloban City to the southern city of Zamboanga, member participants came in droves. ASP chapters like Cebu, Dumaguete and Davao, whose members were unable to travel to Manila, held local walks in solidarity with the national organization.

But the big story from the Angels Walk came from the people who, by entering the MOA Arena gates, experienced a kaleidoscope of emotions. There were tears flowing all throughout the program (from the prayer to the PWA performances, from the crimson stadium seat to the asphalt pavement around MOA) almost as much as the smiles from parents who warmed up to the upbeat Zumba and from the kids who were excited to experience the MOA Arena for the first time.

Universities, PWD organizations, government agencies as well as therapy centers, SPED schools and PWA families joined the festive stream of people in green as it snaked around the Mall of Asia’s spacious grounds. Store staff walked out of their establishments to wave flaglets, cheer and even embrace participants as they passed. Social media was afire with wonderful photos and words of love and hope.

Isiah Maru Deogracias, a younger sibling to a brother with autism, said it most eloquently. “This event is significant to me. This walk with my special brother, is just a step in the many walks I will have with him in this life. Hand in hand with my brother, the walk will not be weary as we are each other’s angels.” (http://verafiles.org)

If this walk among autism advocates brought about a stronger resolve to be an angel to someone with autism, be it a sibling, professional, student, then this has truly been the most profoundly meaningful walk of all.

Thousands join Angels Walk for Autism

Michael Almendrala walks amid a crowd of thousands at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena with two medals hanging on his neck.

This winner in the bowling event in last year’s special Olympics in Australia was just one of the many inspiring stories of persons with autism celebrated at the 5th annual Angels Walk for Autism yesterday.

Officials from various government agencies and private sectors graced the event spearheaded by SM Cares and Autism Society Philippines (ASP).

The project is a personal advocacy of SM Prime Holdings president Hans Sy. “We will continue to support you,” he told ASP members as he led the ceremonial offering of cakes to children with autism.

SM Cares, SM Prime’s corporate social responsibility program, was created 10 years ago following an incident where a person with disability (PWD) got lost in a crowded SM mall.

The causes of the program had expanded to involve welfare of senior citizens, children, overseas Filipino workers, women and the environment.

Members and supporters of the Autism Society Philippines wave flags as they celebrated the group's 25th anniversary and staged the 5th Angels Walk for Autism at the SM Mall of Asia yesterday, with support from SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls.

This year’s Angels Walk has surpassed its target of 10,000 participants as it almost filled the 18,000-seater MOA Arena.

ASP chair Erlina Uy-Koe, for her part, cited the significance of this year’s walk, which marked their organization’s 25th year anniversary.

“This is a show of force. We started with just 11 mothers and now we already have 10,000 members. We’ve grown very fast,” she told The STAR.

She said this year’s theme – Karapatan ng mga Taong may Autismo: Isulong Natin, Ngayon Na! – intends to raise further awareness on the needs of persons with autism.

The ASP is pushing for the passage of laws on mandatory development screening for newborns, comprehensive needs assessment, inclusive education, public servants with special skills, community-based rehabilitation program, comprehensive sensitivity training for schools and workplaces and creative mechanism for funding.

Among those who joined the event were Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III, Elections Commissioner Grace Padaca, Health Secretary Enrique Ona and Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla.

Padaca, in response, cited Republic Act 10366, which provides for special precincts for PWDs during elections. “We will implement this in 2016. Starting April, we will begin with validation of biometrics of voters-PWDs,” she explained in an interview.

Cosplay for autism

Every new year brings the promise of bigger and better things. The collaborating forces behind the National Autism Consciousness Week 2014 aspires to bring you just that. From the amplified Angels Walk for Autism to the week's closing ceremony, the government and private organizations who form the working committee hopes to keep true to the week's theme of “Katuparan ng mga Karapatan ng Pilipinong may Autismo… Isulong Mo! Ngayon Na.”
Causeplay Poster

Mona Magno-Veluz, the Autism Society Philippines' National Secretary returns as this week’s Angel Talker to share the scoop on CAUSEPLAY, a cosplay competition for, by and with individuals with autism and the cosplay community. The hands-on manager for this event is a passionate young man with autism, Gerard Joseph Atienza.

-------------

If you have ever wandered into a mall and found yourself amid strangely-dressed teenagers, fully made up to look like a character you vaguely remember from a Japanese animated series from your childhood, you were very likely amid a cosplay event.

Cosplay, short for costume play, is a performance art in which participants wear costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea, in venues apart from the stage or film. Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture centered on role play. Favorite sources include manga, anime, comic books, video games, TV shows and films. The phenomenon is a significant aspect of popular culture. To a certain degree, cosplay is a potentially significant teaching aide for individuals on the autism spectrum, using positive attributes of their assumed characters to use as behavior templates.

The Autism Society Philippines - Bacoor Chapter, in partnership with Gendai Shikaku Bunka Kenkyukai a recognized student organization of De La Salle University-DasmariƱas and SM City Bacoor, is the driving force behind CAUSEPLAY, a gathering of modern visual culture enthusiasts for various competitions and performance, with cosplay as its highlights. The event will feature three competitions, namely: On-the-Spot Art Competition, Individual Cosplay Competition, and Group Cosplay and Skit Competition. Booths, games, raffle, and more are waiting in store for those who will join the competitions. The event hopes to provide a venue for modern visual culture enthusiasts of diverse abilities to express their interest in the genres of their choice through cosplay and art, while promoting an inclusive and disability-friendly cosplay community. With SM Malls as a strategic partner, the event is brought to the mainstream; and becomes an opportunity for the public to learn more about individuals and families touched by autism.

CAUSEPLAY will be held on 25 January 2014, 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM, at SM Bacoor in Cavite. The event will also include the closing ceremonies of the 18th National Autism Consciousness Week.

Admission is free; however, a minimal registration is required to join the competitions. Persons with disabilities can take advantage of free or discounted registration. Funds raised from this event will ensure that in 2014, ASP Bacoor can continue providing programs and services for the local autism community, including the Siblings’ Camp, which focuses on support for siblings of persons with autism, and Self-Advocates’ Workshop, which aims to mold and train potential autistic self-advocates.

(Visit http://tiny.cc/cply14 for details on how to be part of CAUSEPLAY and pre-register online at http://bit.ly/angelswalk2014 for free tickets and a chance to win an iPad mini.)

Angels Walking for Autism, Making History

The Angels Walk for Autism 2014, a much-awaited celebration, is slated for 19 January 2013, Sunday. This event marks the annual kick-off for the National Autism Consciousness Week. At the heels of their win as the 2013 Apolinario Mabini Presidential Awardee, the Autism Society Philippines envisions this year's walk to be the biggest in the history of their advocacy.

"When we started, we had a few hundred walkers," recalls Dang Koe, ASP's Chair Emeritus. "Last year, we attracted 5,000 registered participants and a few thousands more who joined us as the program was in progress." Mr. Hans Sy has witnessed first-hand how the Angels Walk for Autism attracted a growing number of advocates every year. While the SM MOA Music Hall has been home to ASP's Angels Walk for Autism for several years, Mr. Sy saw that it was time to move to a venue better suited to our increasing numbers.

"By supporting activities like these, we are able to provide our customers and our partners with the opportunity to better understand members of our society who have special needs." commits SM Malls AVP Engineer Bien Mateo. "On a daily basis, SM ensures that each of its mall has sufficient accessibility for PWDs and their families."

In 2014, the Autism Society Philippines will also be celebrating its 25th year. Armed with the focus, determination and hope of our eleven founding mothers, the ASP leadership is keen on providing even more services to the growing number of families living with autism in the Philippines. They have committed to making this year’s Angels Walk for Autism an memorable event to commemorate what will be a landmark year.

[Agenda edited 1/12/2014] At this year’s Angels Walk for Autism, the MOA Arena doors open at 6:30am. At 8am, the talent show featuring gifted PWAs and the Zumba warm up will be our front act. At 9am, the ecumenical prayers and angelic messages from our army of "archangels" -- leaders in government and in the private sector who have made a difference in the lives of individuals with autism. The walk will begin with each delegation queuing to take a leisurely stroll in a pre-determined path around the spacious SM Mall of Asia complex, cheered by marching bands and cheerleaders. The walkers will finish at the SM Music Hall for a raffle -- at stake are an iPad, Canon printers, a bike, and many other prizes -- and the closing messages. The Autism Society Philippines takes this opportunity to have fun and create the much-needed noise around issues that matter most to our community. Attendees can expect the usual festive atmosphere, amid a sea of advocates in green shirts and party favors.

Government agencies and local government units are also on the forefront of advocating for the rights of individuals with autism. The National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) leads the charge in the celebration of this year’s National Autism Consciousness Week where the members of the working committee amplifies the message of inclusion for individuals with autism with the theme "Katuparan ng Karapatan ng Pilipinong may Autismo; Isulong mo, Ngayon Na!"
