The SpEd Society, an organization composed of the Sped Major Students of Trece Martires City College (TMCC), Cavite held a seminar themed “Behavior and Rights of Children with Special Needs” in celebration of the 37th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation week last 6 August 2015.
This was organized by the Sped Society, with the guidance of the Sped Director Dr. Julio E. Estorninos, and with the help and support of the school administration headed by College President Dr. Violeta Regullano, Executive Vice President Mr. Raymund C. Eguillos, Dean of
the College of Education Dr. Lea S. Lontoc, Associate Dean of Education Ms. Lizz Cubol, and the Dean of the College of HRM Ms. Ria Alice Flores.
The guest speaker was none other than Mrs. Mary Janette I. Peña former President of Autism Society Philippines (National) and current President of Autism Society Philippines Dasmariñas City Chapter. Mrs. Peña shared her experiences and knowledge with enthusiasm. She even shared a glimpse of her life with Muneer, her son with autism -- how they both strove to progress, learn new things, and experience more in life. Such informative and inspiring sharing!
We SPED students acquired ideas that we can use in teaching students with special needs. The discussions focused on understanding the behavioral manifestations of autism, and practical steps to help persons with autism overcome the varied spectrum challenges. The seminar lasted for 3 hours, but those 3 hours were all worth it because of the information, strategies, and knowledge that we acquired from our guest speaker. The seminar served as an avenue to open the minds of the Sped major students regarding the path we chose to take.
