Developing Language and Reading Skills at Home

The webinar will cover practical tips and strategies on how to support language acquisition and reading skills development for children with autism in the home setting. The webinar aims to guide parents in choosing developmentally appropriate reading materials and to equip them with skills in conducting read-aloud, performing vocabulary building activities, and facilitating oral and written language tasks.

The ASP Education and Empowerment Program serves as a platform to educate Filipino parents and professionals on the various interventions, modalities and theories surrounding Autism Spectrum Disorder, through monthly seminars and workshops.

Our Speaker:

Teacher Christine Joy Asas also known as Teacher Tin is a practicing Reading Specialist in Canopy Therapy Center and Medmom Institute for Human Development. She is a founding member of CORIS (Council of Reading Intervention Specialists Inc.) and a co-founder of LitCore Center for Holistic Literacy Development. She has been working in the clinical setting for 12 years and she has devoted much of her work to providing reading intervention and academic support to students with autism. She has designed inclusive SpEd programs for schools and has spearheaded numerous training and workshops under DepEd and NGOs as well. Currently, she has her own FB page and YouTube channel where she shares tips, strategies, and resources for fellow teachers and interventionists who have migrated their practice online. Most importantly, she is an older sister and guardian to an adult diagnosed with Intellectual Disability and is an advocate of providing formal literacy instruction to all types of learners.

Happily Ever After: A Virtual Costume Contest

We all may not be able to go out for trick or treat this year; but we can still have fun from home. Join our first ever Autism Society Philippines virtual costume contest and get a chance to win prizes! You can send your entries between 23 October to 1 November 2020.

MECHANICS:

(1) The contest is open to children and youth on the autism spectrum. No age limits.

(2) Dress up as your favorite cartoon hero or villain. Spooky or macabre costumes are discouraged.

(3) Take a photo, dressed in your costume. Photos from previous years are also acceptable.

(4) Send the best photo (just one) to ASP FB Messenger, with your name, mailing address and contact mobile number.

(5) Contestants will be invited to attend the Happily Ever After: A Virtual Costume Contest Launch Zoom event on 28 October 2020, Wednesday at 2pm to play a animated movie quiz and to talk about their costumes.

(6) Contestants may still send their entries until 1 November 2020, Sunday noon.

(7) Photos will be posted on the ASP FB Page. Voting via Facebook likes will run from 28 October 2029, Wednesday to 1 November 2020, Sunday, midnight.

(8) Criteria: Overall Impact (40%), Match toTheme (20%) and On-line Votes (40%).

(9) One winner for the Male and Female categories will be announced on 2 November 2020, Monday via the ASP Facebook Page and Instagram. The prize includes P1,000 and a gift pack.

Visual Supports for Autism

Persons on the Autism Spectrum tend to learn and adapt best using Visual Supports. It helps them manage their behavior, retain and process information, communicate better, and achieve independence. This webinar will define and discuss Visual Supports, its rationale and significance, different contexts and applications, hierarchy and types, and proper use. It will likewise provide practical tips and samples to help parents and caregivers create effective Visual Supports that will facilitate successful home programs in the new normal. Mrs. Maria Yolanda Michelle Bautista-Abundo, M.A.Ed., better known as Teacher Landa, is a sought after Special Education Consultant with over twenty (20) years of work experience in the field.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Science (Major in Behavioral Studies) from the University of the Philippines, Manila. She completed her Master’s Degree in Education (Major in Special Education) at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Shortly after, she finished a Social Entrepreneurship Training Program for Professionals at Ateneo de Manila University’s School of Government.

Teacher Landa is the former Executive Director of The Learning Center, Inc. (TLC), a non-stock, non-profit Special Education center for children, adolescents, and adults with special needs. Only 24 years old in 2002, she became the school’s youngest director. She was responsible for the successful leadership and over-all management of TLC’s programs, services, activities, and school operations. She was at the helm for seventeen years and developed the school's Special Education Curricula from early intervention to work transition training programs. In September 2019, she stepped down as Directress to prioritize the best interest of her son, an extremely premature baby born at only 26 Weeks.

Currently, she is the Special Needs Coordinator of Maria Montessori Children’s School Foundation, Inc., an inclusive school. At present, she works part-time in setting up and managing the school’s Special Needs Office.

Her master’s thesis, “Factors Related to Work Transition for Persons with Special Needs” was published in the Research Journal in Special Education and Independent Living. She likewise completed the “Support System for Persons with Disabilities Course” under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Training Program for Young Leaders 2011 in Fukui, Japan.

Among Teacher Landa’s areas of expertise are Special Education, Structured Teaching, Early Intervention, Vocational Skills Training, Program Development, Curriculum Development, Behavior Modification, Functional Academics, Work Transition Training, Sheltered Workshop, Community Integration, and Teacher Training.

In addition, she likewise owns an advice blog carrying her name, where she publishes free professional recommendations on various issues concerning the development and education of both exceptional and neurotypical learners. Teacher Landa is a staunch and relentless advocate for the special needs sector. She is regularly requested to give seminars or present in conferences on various Special Education topics of interests. She has likewise been a resource person for various publications on Special Education and childhood development.

The Autism Society Philippines -- together with this month's host, ASP Antipolo -- welcome members and non-members, bound by a common experience that is autism. We aspire to educate, empower and inspire to help build an Autism-OK Philippines.

MS. CARMEL ALMENDRALA. A retired ambassador’s wife and an Ulirang Ina Awardee of 2010, Carmel personifies diplomacy as she faces the world with poise, grace and intelligence. Over the years and in the many countries where their family has had to relocate because of her husband's work, she laboured tirelessly to advocate for her son Michael, now in his 40’s, and for the rest of persons on the autism spectrum. Serving as Trustee for more than seven terms, she reminds young mothers of children on the autism spectrum: Grab every opportunity and don’t take no for an answer. This is evident in her son Mike, who is a Special Olympian Gold Medalist (who competed in 2003 in powerlifting in Dublin, Ireland and in 2013 in bowling in Australia where he won 2 bronze medals), a 2005 Apolinario Mabini Candidate, and an independent member of the community working as an administrative staff of the Philippine Information Agency. Michael is believe to be the very 1st Person on the Autism Spectrum in the Philippines to earn a Civil Service Eligibility. Michael's most recent achievement is when he was chosen to represent the Philippines in the "International Conference on Disability Rights" in South Korea last March 7 to 10, 2018, where 400 participants from different countries attended.
