ASP heralds the arrival of "Love Child"

by Imelda Alviso

The much-anticipated premiere of "Love Child," an entry in the 2024 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, happened last August 5, 2024, Monday. This event, held at Cinema 2, Ayala Mall Manila Bay in Parañaque City, drew an eager and diverse crowd of cinephiles. The film features an original script that won first place in the Dulang Pampelikula Category of the 71st Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. Set in Negros Occidental, it follows a young couple navigating the challenges of raising their autistic son.

The image shows ASP viewers with Professor Jonathan Jurillo.
ASP viewers with the director, Professor Jonathan Jurillo

The film's leading stars, Jane Oineza, and RK Bagatsing -- a real-life couple -- attended with John Tyrron Ramos, who portrayed their son. The director, Professor Jonathan Jurillo, dedicated the film to his son on the autism spectrum, wearing an orange shirt as a nod to the Autism Society Philippines (ASP). Veteran actress and director Laurice Guillen was also present.

WHAT WE FELT. Watching "Love Child" was immersive and emotionally engaging, with powerful performances and a gripping storyline. The film realistically depicts the challenges of raising a child on the autism spectrum, showing the parents' journey through the emotional stages toward acceptance. Despite minor issues like the musical score and occasional unclear dialogue, the movie was relatable and inspiring, raising awareness about autism and offering hope to families. We felt how the film brought joy to the audience, leveraging the power of cinema to bring people together.

The film resonated deeply with us families caring for a loved one on the spectrum, as it mirrored our own experiences. The early years after the diagnosis were marked with financial and emotional struggles. Having emerged from the difficult years, we bring hope to other families facing similar challenges and a resolve to help increase awareness about ASD.

WHAT WE LEARNED. The movie taught us the importance of seeking professional advice, following it and pursuing interventions suitable for the child. The film stressed the need for a supportive and safe environment for the entire family. It showed that individuals on the autism spectrum, like the grandfather in the movie, can lead fulfilling lives.

ASP advocates from various communities -- Imelda Alviso, Romulo Alviso, Andrea Alviso (Paranque), Rhodora Velasco (Las Pinas), Love Joy Alburo, Kevin Claude Alburo (Muntinlupa) went home with the hope that the movie industry continues to support local films that bring a dignified and just portrayal to the lives of families who live with disabilities.

Airbnb, the global community-driven hospitality platform, has extended its support to the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) through the Airbnb Community Grant. Airbnb Hosts, renowned for being advocates of their local communities, nominated organizations that strive to make a difference in various critical areas. These include environmental sustainability, economic empowerment, ending abuse and exploitation, mental health, and safe housing, among others. The Airbnb Community Grant is a result of this initiative, providing financial support to organizations such as ASP that are dedicated to creating positive change in their communities.

“This grant empowers us to continue our journey towards building a society that embraces diversity and ensures that every person, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to thrive." - Lorenzo Juan Sumulong III, National President, Autism Society Philippines

The grant will specifically support two programs of the Autism Society Philippines - ASP PweDay and ASP AUdventures. These initiatives are designed to provide life-changing experiences, foster skills development, and promote socialization in an inclusive and joyful atmosphere. By allocating resources to cover the operational expenses of these initiatives, individuals on the autism spectrum can actively engage in activities that contribute to their personal growth and overall well-being.

As we celebrate the union of Airbnb's Community Grant and the Autism Society Philippines, it is a reminder that when communities come together with a shared vision, incredible transformations can occur. The support from Airbnb reflects a broader commitment to fostering inclusivity, empowerment, and positive change.

The 28th National Autism Consciousness Week

Duty-bearers from government agencies and rights-bearers from civil society organizations and advocate institutions are one with the nation in celebrating the Philippines 28th National Autism Consciousness Week to be held from 14 to 20 January 2024. This annual observance was made possible by President Fidel Ramos' Proclamation 711 of 1996 – in inspiring genuine and organic acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation of persons on the autism spectrum in our society and our global community.

The image shows a dark aqua background with three settings logo shown at the left. There are name and date of activities and a QR Code shown at the right side below.
The 28th National Autism Consciousness Week Banner

The activities of the week promote action by the public and private sectors towards enabling persons on the autism spectrum to live with dignity, enjoy equal rights and access, function independently, and contribute productively. Society should strive beyond “consciousness” or “awareness” and inspire genuine inclusion -- through acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation! Public and private institutions are encouraged to spearhead creative activities, events, and programs, toward building opportunities for our neurodiverse population, all over the country.

Read more about the NACW 2024 Game Plan for the week at: https://bit.ly/NACW2024-gameplan. This is a live document that continues to be revised as additional inputs are receives from advocates from all over the country.

This year's theme, "Accessible Education and Economic Empowerment for Pinoys on the Autism Spectrum" -- is consistent with the global disability community’s aspirations expressed by the United Nations during the last International Day of Persons with Disability:

“Given the multiple crises we are facing today, the world is not on track to reach numerous Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets by 2030. Preliminary findings from the forthcoming UN Disability and Development Report 2023 indicate that the world is even more off-track in meeting several SDGs for persons with disabilities.

Our efforts to rescue the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities, need to be intensified and accelerated, given that persons with disabilities have historically been marginalized and have often been among those left furthest behind.”

A fundamental shift in commitment, solidarity, financing and action is critical. Encouragingly, with the adoption of the Political Declaration of the recent SDG Summit, world leaders have recommitted themselves to achieving sustainable development and shared prosperity for all, by focusing on policies and actions that target the poorest and most vulnerable, including persons with disabilities.”

The theme intends to:

1. nurture partnerships between the government and the private sector to realize accessible education and economic empowerment for Filipinos on the autism spectrum – consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #4 and #8.

2. inspire disability inclusion among like-minded national, local and community thought leaders who create policy and provide services for Filipinos on the autism spectrum and those who care for them– consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #10.

3. grow a community of allies within the country, the region and the rest of the world, supportive of programs towards genuine disability inclusion -- consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #10 and #17.
